Contemporary Artist
Exploring abstract, urban, and coastal themes through colour and atmosphere.
My work is an exploration of the dialogue between the solid architecture of the Maltese coast and the fluid, ever-changing rhythms of the sea. Living and working by the sea, I have been constantly captivated by the colours and textures of the water—and the way these elements transform the world around us: turning a familiar harbour into a mosaic of colour, or a simple bridge into a glowing encounter.
I am drawn to moments of transition: the flickering tension between light and shade. I paint the memory and vibration of the harbour, seeking the pulse of the atmosphere rather than simply the shape of the object.
“I embrace Non-Finito—when a painting is left open, the viewer’s brain must finish the work.”

CURATOR’S NOTE
“Ray Axiaq’s work brings together colour, movement, texture, and atmosphere in compositions shaped by memory, observation, and imagination. Moving between abstraction and figuration, his practice explores place, emotion, and visual experience, marked by a strong sense of rhythm and presence.”
